Review: Warnings to the Churches
Here is a clarion call to Christians to hold fast to the true Gospel – that is that we are saved by grace alone through faith in Christ alone.
The 8 chapters in the book have been taken from two works of the Victorian minister: Knots Untied and Home Truths. They cover subjects such as the nature of the true church, the dangers of those who want to add to or take away from the scriptures, the fallibility of ministers and the risk of idolatry.
His aim is to warn against error, not win a popularity contest. Therefore he speaks boldly against the errors of the Catholic Church and the Church of England. He urges his readers to leave any church if the minister does not preach the Gospel.
The book breathes the scriptures. Every chapter is an exposition of a verse or passage. As always he writes clearly and simply. His application is straightforward and direct.
Bishop Ryle writes with the Church of England in mind but this does not detract from the book’s relevance. Read this and take heed of his warnings. They are needed now more than when he wrote these words.
